We’re on alert. The humans are busy.

We see them sprucing up their wardrobes, banishing their winter weight, drinking in the fine smells in the air as the world transforms from grey to green.  Yup. It’s almost here… SUMMERTIME!  Memorial Day will usher it in, and of course, we plan to celebrate.

While binge-watching the Legally Blonde movies (we love Bruiser) we saw a commercial that inspired us. A group called Carry the Load has an extremely cool Memorial Day plan and we want to be part of it.

Honor and Celebrate Our Nation’s Heroes

Carry The Load is a non-profit dedicated to providing active, meaningful ways to honor and celebrate the sacrifices made by our nation’s heroes — military, veterans, first responders and their families.

What started as a mission to restore the true meaning of Memorial Day, which we like a lot. Then it broadened to include more than just our military heroes and more than just the one holiday. Carry The Load works to bring all Americans together to participate in honoring our nation’s heroes every day. Isn’t that smart?

Since us dogs have the power to reach deep into the human heart, we decided to take this mission to our Instagram page.  We’re going to Honor our fallen heroes by sharing their stories using #CarryTheLoad.

Of course, we need some decorations to enhance our natural cuteness and make the humans smile, so we sent Mom to the dollar store. It’s our go-to store for all things holiday. Mom came home with a whole bag of red, white and blue.

Mom began making us fancy collars and they turned out so cute! Here’s how to make them.

This is what you need

There is a tiny bit of sewing. You can do it by machine or by hand.

Cut out your pattern

You want your pattern to be a little shorter than your collar, and the fold-down part needs to be big enough that your collar will easily thread through.

Pin the collar to the felt and cut it out.

Next for the sewing part.  Fold the collar at the notches, along the fold line.  Pin it, then sew it, making a tunnel for the collar to slip through.

Layout your design

We played around a lot and we found we like it best with three rows across the top, then fill in the rest by following the edge and working your way up.  But do anything you want.  You can add lace pieces.

Start gluing

We used a glue gun for this.  Apply a line of glue along the place where you want to place your first beads, then place the beads on the glue.  Continue doing this until all your beads are in place.

Let it dry, and thread the collar through the tunnel you made.

Now you’re ready for fun holiday pictures and parties!

Look at us.  Aren’t we cute?   Tag us in your holiday pictures @LolaandPooch!
